GREENWOOD, S.C. — The Science on Tap community lecture series is returning to Greenwood this fall with a presentation focused on promising new developments in Alzheimer’s disease research.
Science on Tap will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the JC Self Research Institute on the campus of the Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC). The topic is “Mitochondria in Motion: New Hope for Alzheimer’s Disease.”

The evening’s speaker, Dr. Rich Steet, Director of Research at GGC, will provide an update on the Center’s Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. Alzheimer’s Initiative and discuss progress in Mitochondrial Organelle Transplantation (MOTTM) research being conducted in collaboration with MitoSense and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The presentation will explore how scientists are investigating the role of mitochondria — often referred to as the “powerhouse of the cell” — in neurodegenerative disease and how innovative therapies may offer new hope for patients and families affected by Alzheimer’s and other related disorders.
“Our goal with this program is to engage the Greenwood community in an accessible way with cutting-edge scientific discoveries happening right here at home while fostering dialogue around research and innovation,” said Steet.
The event is free and open to the public.
