GREENWOOD, S.C. —The Board of Directors of the Greenwood Genetic Center announced the initiation of a comprehensive CEO succession planning process, reaffirming its commitment to strong governance and the organization’s long-term success.

The succession planning process is being undertaken in partnership with current President and CEO, Dr. Steve Skinner, to ensure the organization is well-positioned for the future through thoughtful leadership planning. While no retirement date has been established, the Board believes it is prudent to begin succession planning well in advance of any future leadership transition.
As part of this process, the Board will evaluate the leadership skills and experience needed to guide the Greenwood Genetic Center through its next chapter while working closely with Dr. Skinner to ensure continuity of the organization’s mission, strategic priorities, and culture. Dr. Skinner will continue serving as President and CEO and remains fully engaged in leading the organization.
For nearly four decades, Dr. Skinner has helped establish the Greenwood Genetic Center as a nationally recognized leader in medical genetics, research, education, and patient care. During his tenure, the organization has expanded access to innovative genetic services while forging transformative partnerships with organizations including Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina, and Project HOPE Foundation, advancing precision medicine and improving the lives of patients and families across South Carolina and beyond.

“Thoughtful succession planning is one of the Board’s most important responsibilities,” said Howell Clyborne, Chair of the GGC Board of Directors. “Beginning this process now reflects our commitment to ensuring the long-term strength and stability of Greenwood Genetic Center. We are grateful for Dr. Skinner’s exceptional leadership and appreciate his partnership in helping prepare the organization for continued success in the years ahead.”
“It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to serve Greenwood Genetic Center and the patients, families, staff, and communities who have entrusted us with their care for more than 50 years,” said Dr. Skinner. “I remain fully committed to leading the organization as we continue expanding access to genetics care, advancing precision medicine and research, strengthening our partnerships, and preparing Greenwood Genetic Center for an even brighter future.”
“Greenwood Genetic Center is one of South Carolina’s remarkable success stories, with a longstanding commitment to compassionate patient care, scientific discovery, education, and service,” said Matt Logan, MD, President of Self Regional Healthcare and a member of the GGC Board of Directors. “The Board’s commitment to thoughtful succession planning reflects our responsibility to build upon the strong foundation established by generations of leaders, clinicians, researchers, and staff. We are confident that Greenwood Genetic Center will continue to advance its mission and serve patients and families for years to come.”
The Board will continue this important planning process in the months ahead as part of its ongoing commitment to effective governance and strategic leadership.
