Cell Culture Only (CVS)

Cell culture only (chorionic villus sampling (CVS)) increases the number of placental cells for further prenatal cytogenetic and molecular diagnostic testing. This test can also be used to maintain cells for additional reflex or repeat testing.

Maternal cell contamination (MCC) is required if additional testing is being performed at GGC. Back up cultures are automatically set up when prenatal samples arrive unless it is indicated on the test requisition form that cultures are housed at an external lab.

Cell growth cannot be guaranteed. Cell growth is dependent on several factors including inadequate amount of specimen, age of specimen, exposure of specimen to extreme temperatures, specific preservatives, and the type of tissue sent for culture.

Please note:

  • A report is not generated for cell cultures unless a culture failure occurs.
  • Turnaround time can take up to 21 days

Clinical Information

Chorionic villus tissue is collected during a chorionic villus sampling (CVS) procedure, typically performed between 10 and 13 weeks of pregnancy, and is used for prenatal diagnostic testing to evaluate chromosomal abnormalities and other inherited conditions.

Technical Information

Specimens are cultured and harvested per standard laboratory procedures (The AGT Cytogenetics Laboratory Manual, 3rd ed, 1997).

Prenatal Specimen Requirements

This test requires 20-30mg of chorionic villus tissue collected in a sterile tube with transport media or sterile saline.

Prenatal Transport Instructions

Chorionic villus tissue should be kept at room temperature and sent by courier or overnight shipping to arrive at the laboratory the next day. Do not freeze or refrigerate the specimen. Shipping sample Monday through Thursday is recommended.
